Back from Vacation
I just returned from a trip to California. One of my best friends, Dave Hahn, was getting married in San Francisco, which finally gave me an excuse to get to that part of the country. I've been to southern California before, but I found the Bay Area to be much more my style. Dave and I have been friends for a long time, and a big part of our friendship has been our shared geekiness about the internet, creating websites, and blogging. We started MusicianWages.com together in 2008 after a few other less successful web endeavors. One of my favorite blog posts Dave has ever written is this. Dave was going through chemotherapy for Hodgkins Lymphoma back in 2005 when I got married, and he made the trip from Chicago to St. Louis to be at our wedding. When a bunch of my friends sat in with the band to play one of my songs, he sat down at the piano. That was the first time we ever played music together!
The festivities surrounding Dave and Jessie's wedding lasted the entire weekend. It was an amazing time. After the weekend I made sure to go surfing with Dave, one of the things he picked up since moving out there last summer. I was not good, but it was still fun.
After the weekend Jill and I headed east to the Sierras, to stay in a cabin just minutes from the Calaveras Big Tree State Park. We did plenty of hiking, and even managed to get to Yosemite to hike part of the Upper Yosemite Falls Trail.
The trip was invigorating, and inspired a lot of musical ideas which I've been furiously writing down since returning. We're already plotting our return.
Cheers to Dave and Jessie for a long and happy union, and for hosting us while we were out there, and to the people of California (like John Muir) that have preserved that part of our planet.
