This week's lick comes from Wes Montgomery's "Four on Six" solo off The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery. Wes plays this over a Gmin vamp, but it outlines a C7 chord with the prominent C and E natural notes. Or, you could say he's outlining a Gmin13 chord and is highlighting the 9, 11, and 13. Miles Davis was known for doing this sort of thing. However you look at it, this sort of thing can spice up chords that hang around for 4 or more bars, as is the case in "Four on Six".
