This week's lick is for my other favorite instrument, mandolin! In bluegrass, there are a lot of tunes in A, D, and G, all of which are pretty easy to play on mandolin because you can utilize open strings. Sometimes, though, somebody calls a tune in a key like Bb. Guitar and banjo can use a capo, but you don't see mandolinists using capos very often.
The solution? Practice! And work out a few Bb licks for your bag. Here's an nice little lick you can easily move up and down the neck, or down to the lower three strings, and transpose to other keys.
